In 1858 in Pori, Carl Anton Björnberg and Karl Johan Lönegren founded Porin Konepaja, a machinery workshop and manufacturer. The company was an important employer in Pori and in 1877 became a part of Rosenlew Ab., a Finnish industrial giant which went defunct in 1987.
Even after Porin Konepaja became part of another company, they still produced engines primarily for agricultural use. The company called its engines BMW engines, which comes from the Swedish name of the company: Björneborgs Mekaniska Werkstad. The company used the abbreviation even before the famous German car manufacturer BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) was founded.
