Designed Technology

The exhibition entity Designed Technology – Windows on Technology and Design supplements the general view of design and highlights how design has always been visible in the history of industry and technology. Design is also part of industrial processes and services. The entity provides design perspectives on the museum’s technology, forest and chemical industry exhibitions. Thematic design pathways will be built to guide visitors between the different exhibitions, era, processes and materials used.

The Window on Design pathway highlights specific and even surprising exhibition elements through which museum visitors can learn more about design processes and the entire lifecycle of an industrial product.

The Designer pathway uses work from young designers to illustrate the complex phases of the design process and the extensive team work that they involve. The Designer pathway is being implemented in co-operation with Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

As well as being part of the permanent exhibitions, the year of design will also be visible in the Museum of Technology’s changing exhibitions. Give me a Hand – the Technology of Tools presents tools, their evolution and operating characteristics. Tools manufactured in the Fiskars and Billnäs ironworks and the rare collection of industrial designer Olavi Lindén provide the foundation for the wide array of objects in this exhibition. This exhibition is based on the Tools exhibition produced by the Cooperative of Artisans, Designers and Artists in Fiskars.

From Oven to Table - Finnish DESIGN Cast Iron for the Kitchen exhibition has been jointly organised by the Karkkila Ironworks Museum Senkka and the Rosenlew Museum in Pori. It presents cast iron kitchen products designed by top Finnish names like Timo Sarpaneva, Antti Nurmesniemi, Heikki Orvola and Nanny Still in the 1950s and 1960s.
