Finland and the history of technology

The Museum of Technology is a national special museum, whose mission is to store, study and present the development of the technical field and industrial production in Finland and their impact on society and living conditions. It is the only general museum of technology in Finland.

The museum collections represent the story of Finland from when it was an agrarian society to it becoming a leading developer and producer of high technology in the global market place.

The Museum of Technology is run by the private Museum of Technology Foundation. The foundation was established in 1969 by major industrial and engineering organizations, museum professionals and the municipalities in the Helsinki metropolitan region.

The museum is located on a historical site in the old waterworks on a small island by the rapids in the Old Town of Helsinki. On this island, the Swedish King Gustav Vasa built an administrative centre for Helsinki, the city he established in 1550. Since those days, the shores of the Vantaanjoki river have been the choice location for industrial facilities requiring hydropower and water.

The Museum of Technology is part of the Trafiikki network of museums, www.trafiikki.fi.
